Adrian Tan quoted in BT: “Compass, SingNet in copyright fight over alleged Singtel TV infringement”
Adrian Tan, who is head of IP & TMT at TSMP Law Corporation, commented in a Business Times story published on 27 October 2020 on collecting society Compass seeking 1.5% of SingNet’s annual pay-TV net revenue from April 2013 to March 2019. He said that while CMOs can serve a need in society, they “have been operating in an unregulated ecosystem” here.
“Virtually anyone could set up a CMO, and start asking for money from pubs, shopping malls, cinemas, broadcasters and the like, under the guise of collecting copyright licence fees,” he said. “As Singapore solidifies its position as an intellectual property hub, there is a need to put rules in place. It will reduce litigation, and improve certainty.”
