In a CNA news segment aired on 4 July 2019 about a dormitory operator and its director being charged after several dormitories were found in “filthy and unacceptable” living conditions, Ian Lim said: “The company being charged is one thing. Of course, a company can only be fined, and perhaps then its activities can be constrained, perhaps it will have difficulty then getting more of these licences in future. But the director being charged — and bear in mind that these charges can result in potential jail time for the director if convicted — is potentially a very large deterrent. A lot of these operators will now need to be very careful, or to take a much closer look into how they have been running these dormitories and how they have been maintaining them.”
