Commenting on ACRA’s rejection of a business registration of the New Naratif website, Stefanie Yuen Thio says that under the Singapore Business Names Registration Act, anyone wanting to conduct business in Singapore would need to have some form of business registration, most typically a private limited company. If the company is planning on engaging in ongoing activities in Singapore, such as organising discussion groups, workshops and “Democracy Classrooms”, then it would need to be registered.
Given the recent rejection of New Naratif’s incorporation application, the promoters of the company could appeal to the Finance Minister, but would need to satisfy the Minister that they are not funded by foreign organisations wanting to influence Singapore politics. Her further comments here.
