Ian was interviewed by Noreen Jazul on Singapore Business Review. The article focused on the recent Lazada layoffs and touched on whether companies should notify unions about retrenchments, and included Ian’s comments that generally, there is no legal requirement for companies to consult unions about retrenchments, though the scenario changes when the company is unionised. Ian noted that since Lazada is unionised, the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) can drag the company to the Industrial Arbitration Court (IAC) should there be a labour dispute arising from the retrenchment. Companies have to notify the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) of every retrenchment, as long as there are at least 10 employees.
