Stefanie Yuen Thio and Stephanie Chew wrote an Op-Ed for CNA.
The commentary highlighted the problem of deepfakes, which had hit Singapore twice in November 2024 – first affecting Singapore Sports School teenagers, then with five ministers and over 100 civil servants receiving extortionary emails over compromising deepfake videos.
Stefanie and Stephanie outlined Singapore’s quick and tough stance on tackling deepfakes, further sharing what victims can do, and what harms would befall perpetrators. They also wrote about how education and rehabilitation could play a role in preventing future incidents. Seeing as the problem is borderless due to the nature of the internet, they shared what Singapore and the international community are doing to counter the issue, and how ultimately, individuals must play their part.
The article was also published on the firm’s Forefront newsletter on 4 December with the headline, “Tackling The Deepfake Outbreak”.
